My Favorite HNT

Osbasso declared that HNT this week would be dedicated to our favorite HNT photo of our own. Since he's the "boss," I of course complied with this theme. That and I didn't have a new photo to post this week- plus I skipped last week, so I'm feeling like a big slacker.

My favorite of my own HNT photos is the one from September 22. It was my third week of participating in HNT, and I wanted to show a little more skin without being too revealing. I chose to take a photo of my back for a couple reasons:

1) It was the only expanse of bare skin that I felt I could share without creeping out my family (I have teenage siblings who visit here)
2) I have body issues that we won't even begin to discuss
3) I was exhausted and wanted to lie down

After I took the photo, I decided to change it to black and white because, well, I could. I loved the way my hair turned out and decided, body issues aside, it was a nice photo and worthy of posting.

Here is the photo from my original post:

And, the original photo:

Christmas...

Decorating the tree:

Decorated 4 year old style:

More Christmas...

Cookies and (chocolate) milk for Santa:

Before Hurricane Munchkin:

During the storm:

In the aftermath:
We had a good time, though it was very different. Losing two people this year- especially one to whom Christmas was so important- was bound to change things. I didn't realize how different it would be. Kinda sad, but thankful for the good things we still have. As much as I hate the holidays, it turned out okay. And Munchkin has a blast!

Out of the mouths of babes...

"You know what I want to get you for Christmas mommy?"

"What sweetheart?"

" A new shirt with no holes in it, a hair trim (cut), and new glasses that aren't crooked."

"Oh. Okay."

"And some jewelry, cause that would be really special."

Apparently I looked like a homeless person last night.

MWAM # 2

I know it's country again, but that's the mood I've been in lately. This song is pretty much self explanatory. And the person it's intended for knows who they are.

Artist/Band: Sara Evans & Vince Gill Song: No Place That Far

I can't imagine, any greater fear
Then waking up, without you here,
And though the sun, will still shine on,
My whole world, would all be gone,
But not for long,

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers,
just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I will find a way,
to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

It wouldn't matter why we're apart,
Lonely minds or two stubborn hearts
Nothing short of God above
Could turn me away from your love
I need you that much

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers,
just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I will find a way,
to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers,
just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I will find a way,
to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

Change is good... or so I hear

I changed the template here cause, well, I can. I needed something soothing and this seems to be the answer. Let me know what you think. I know it's not pink- but crazy or not, I could only handle the pink for so long.

Admitting you have a problem is the 1st step

So, I came face to face with my addiction this evening when I decided to clean out the drawers in my kitchen. Most people have a junk drawer... I have a pen drawer. This collection of writing implements does not even include those in my purses, car, or bedroom. This is not a recent problem. I have had this affliction as long as I can remember. I carried tons of pens (gel, glitter, ballpoint, markers, etc...) all through school and beyond. At any given time I can probably be found with a variety colors and textures of pen in my bag. I've sworn off buying any new ones- but it's hard, very hard. There is just something so wonderful about a new pen and a blank piece of paper....

Bah Humbug!

Is it a bad sign that eight days before Christmas I have yet to purchase a single present?

My mom used to yell at me... and I need a pedicure

When I was younger (read: teenager) I used to take the dog outside in my bare feet. In the snow. I didn't mind it, but my mom did. She'd tell me that if I got sick, I was still going to school. I never got sick from the snow... just the germs I picked up in public school. Also, this photo made me very aware of the fact that it's been ages since I've pampered my tootsies. I miss summer shoes... Happy HNT!

A Christmas Tradition

When I was a little girl (and even after I wasn't) my mom and grandmother would buy my sisters and I each an ornament every year. Now that I have my own family, I continue this tradition. I have purchased an ornament for my son every Christmas since he was born. Though I've only been married 6 months, my husband and I have been together for three years. Each year we have gotten an ornament as a couple. This year, my husband surprised me with this ornament- a miniature bride and groom. And so this sappiness can be considered a HNT post- I give you my left hand, complete with rings! Happy HNT!!!

Pieces of my Heart

On Thursday, December 1, 2005 I lost my grandfather to complications from cancer and heart problems. On June 9, 2005 I lost my mother in a tragic car accident. On October 16, 2000 I lost my grandmother to diabetes related illness. It's been a rough few years, but I have my memories of these special people to get me through. The above photo is the three of them long before I was around. Do not weep for the loss, but celebrate their life.

Music with a message (MWAM): Chapter 1

I was driving home this evening listening to the radio, when an older song came on. Now, I'm one of those sappy people that actually listens to the lyrics and have been known (on many occasions) to burst into tears when moved by the words.

As the song started playing, I thought to myself, "This is how I want all of my exes to feel when they think of me." And so, on that note (hehe, a pun!) here are the lyrics:

Doug Stone - Why Didn't I Think Of That

He sends her roses and lines he composes,
things a lady loves.
Well he's there to hold her when she needs a shoulder,
if life gets too rough.

Oh now that she's left
I keep kicking myself
whenever I start thinking back
He says he needs her,
tells her he loves her,
why didn't I think of that?

When she gets down
Well he's always around her,
he makes her smile again.
He mends her heartaches,
remembers her birthday,
and tries to be a friend.

Now that she's gone
I know what I did wrong,
it's all so simple in fact.
Well he says he wants her,
can't live without her,
why didn't I think of that?

Ooh I've been watching
every move that he makes
ooh I've been thinking,
it could have been different somehow
If I'd know what I know now.

He sings her love songs
and tells her his love's strong
things she needs to know
He tries to please her,
and calls for no reason,
just to say hello

He says he loves her
and he'll never leave her
and I never will get her back
I did my best,
thought of everything else,
why didn't I think of that?

ooh I've been watching
every move that he makes
ooh I've been thinking,
it could have been different somehow
If I'd know what I know now.

He sends her roses
and magic and poses
things a lady loves.
Well he's there to hold her
when she needs a shoulder
if life gets too rough

Oh now that she's left
I keep kicking myself
whenever I start thinking back
He says he needs her,
tells her he loves her,
why didn't I think of that?

He says he loves her
and he'll never leave her,
why didn't I think of that?

I know it's country, but I like it. Yeah, I want them to miss me (cause I'm fabulous you know?) but it also makes me think about how incredible my husband is. He does all this and so much more. That's the best part.

HNT-Another side of me...

Though I don't wear them very often, I have several pairs of these stockings. They're part of my "I may be a mommy, but I'm not old and boring yet" wardrobe. Sometimes, I even convince myself... Happy HNT!

Lesson # 2: Why I haven't committed filicide

"Mom, can we get a koala dog? He's little and we could keep him in the basement."

A koala dog? This cuteness is the only reason I have not yet strangled my sweet little beast.

Koala dog=Chihuahua

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Filicide=the deliberate act of a parent killing his or her own son or daughter . The term can also be applied to the parent who has committed such an act. The word filicide derives from the Latin word filius meaning "son".

Attack of the Atomic Fireballs

Ever have trouble keeping a straight face when your child ends up in an unfortunate situation that's too hilarious for words? Yeah, me too.

Last night, after a long day of Munchkin acting like a hellion, we were sitting on the living room floor (we have very nice furniture, but for some reason we keep sitting on the floor) watching movies on the WE network. He brought out his bowl of Halloween candy and was sampling all the things he hadn't tried yet. I wasn't paying much attention to the candies he was eating until...

He hopped up off the floor and ran to the bathroom with his arms flailing and mouth open. He was spitting in the toilet and not answering my questions of, "what's the matter?" I look over to the spot where he had been sitting and noticed the open and half empty box of Atomic Fireballs. At this point he runs back in the room drooling and hopping up and down wanting a drink. I gave him my Sprite (mostly cause I felt guilty for laughing) and waited for him to cool his mouth.

He put half a box of those hot little wonders in his mouth at one time! When he was talking again he told me he wanted to throw them away cause they were, "too hot, they make your mouth burn!"

On another note, the movie we were watching was Amy Fisher: My Story. He kept asking me why she "fell in love" with so many different men. And why she shot that lady. How do you even began to explain something like that to a 4 year old? I didn't know any way to do so, so I distracted him with, "It's bedtime!" Worked like a charm.

HNT in Nature

Last week Muse threw down a gauntlet challenging HNTers to a week of nekkid in nature shots. Since I have family who read this blog (I fear they might find the "au naturale" a bit overwhelming) I went with a shot from my honeymoon. This picture was taken two days after I got married (that would make the date May 22) in Red River Gorge. Happy Thanksgiving and HNT!

Lesson # 1: Distraction techniques of 4 year olds

I was tying Munchkin's shoes (he can almost do it! I can't wait!) this morning so we could go to the bank, and I decided to straighten out his socks. No big deal, right? Wrong.

"Son, why do you have a booger on your sock?" (I know they were clean when they came out of the basket)

"Ummm, whoops... (little giggle)...that's not a LeapPad cartridge." (Grin.)

"Oo...kay."

And there you have it.

Monday, November 21, 2005

Oh, but I am...(insert evil laughter)

"I thought you were my nice mommy!"

On the way home tonight...

... I saw a church sign that had an "inspirational" message on it. It said:

"Aspire to Inspire before you Expire"

My thoughts: Ewwww, morbid and creepy.

Can you hear me now? Good...

I have always had issues with my ears. They are oddly shaped and incredibly small (not that you can tell in this photo). I have a love of long dangly (is that a word?) earrings so that helps. And for my next trick... I can tuck my earlobes inside my ears! Yeah, I know, wow. Happy HNT.

Underprivileged child

My son is an only child thus far. My husband and I have discussed having a second child, but have not made plans to do so yet. That being said, my son is a tad bit spoiled. (You did not hear this from me, as I think he's a perfect angel. Uh-huh.) This picture on the left is his bedroom, complete with mess. Notice the assorted toys and books as well as the TV/VCR and video game system (I highly recommend the VSmile!).

This photo on the right is our basement. That's right folks, it's a playroom. My husband put down the carpet, painted the wall with chalkboard paint (my idea, but I'm not allowed to paint- apparently I make a mess) and we put all the toys down there that wouldn't fit in Munchkin's bedroom. Yep, too many to fit in the bedroom. My son has these two large spaces full of toys to play with. Pretty cool, huh?

Wanna guess what he spent two hours playing with this evening? Look below:

This is a Hot Wheels (not Matchbox, cause that would be wrong!) dump truck full of random crap he picked up off my living room floor. Apparently I need to vacuum. He drove it around the living room and ramped it off the pile of mail under a chair. Apparently I also need to file. It's a damn shame he has no toys to keep him busy. He has to play with garbage on the floor. Someone please get this kid a present! His mom obviously neglects him! And, she's a horrible housekeeper.

Boredom can be scary

I am on my own this weekend (TR is working in Michigan and Munchkin is with his dad) so I have to entertain myself- this is never a good idea.

So I'm searching around on Google and think to myself, "Gosh, I wonder if there are any sex offenders in my area?" Trust me when I tell you it's better to not find out the answer to this question. Especially if you have children.

I found the sex offender registration website for my state (if you live in Ohio and feel like you need a little creepiness in your life, the link is here) and looked up my county. In my town there are approx. 40 registered sex offenders. 40! Just in my town! In my school district? 101.

So naturally I looked at the address of each one, and photo (yes, they even have photos!) and wondered if I had ever seen any of them at the store or walking down the street.

In my horrified state of shock I searched the town and school districts of the rest of my family. Scary. I found out that a member of my family lives next door to a convicted rapist. Next door! This is scary. I'm pretty sure they don't know, and I don't know if I should tell them. Ignorance is bliss, right? I wish I didn't know now.

Happy Fall (Oh, and HNT too)!!!

As we live in a townhouse (great from a someone-else-does-all-the-maintenance point of view), we have no yard. TR and I took Munchkin to the county park and raked (TR raked and I took pictures) a ton of leaves into a huge pile. Munchkin loved it. Since I was the cameraman (woman) this is the only pic I ended up in. Notice how sweaty my son is? He seems to think it's necessary to have a half mile run before landing in the leaves. It was a great time and we didn't have to worry about the pile of leaves killing our grass when we were done. Though I doubt that will be something I worry about when I do have a yard...

Political bias

We came home from the store today (Yeah Sam's Club!) to the scene at right. A political flyer urging us to vote for so-and-so because they are so wonderful and have everyone's best interest at heart. The usual campaigning bullshit.

Now I seldom comment on political matters and typically don't care who is in charge of things- basically it doesn't matter who you vote for they're just gonna fuck it up anyway so why bother? I am not nor have I ever been (nor do I ever intend to be) a registered voter. I just don't care.

Since I don't often (read: never) voice an opinion other than annoyance at the ridiculous signs all over the place this time of year, I feel that my son will be able to make his own decisions about these things (and the God issue- but that's another day, another post) when he's old enough to do so.

So, when we got to the door, Munchkin pulls out the flyer and looks up at TR and I. He gets that incredulous look that only a 4 year old can pull off and says,

"What kind of idiot would stick this in our door like that?"

I guess he's figuring it out sooner than I expected.

Some people should not be parents...

I know I've been lax on the posting lately, but I have been really sick the past few days. Sorry. I'm feeling a little better now so hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

Monday night TR, Junior, and I took Munchkin and Little Bit trick-or-treating. It was a good time and the weather was very cooperative. Munchkin went as a Power Ranger (the red one! Duh!), Little Bit was Dorothy (complete with sparkling shoes), and Junior was her usual charming self (luv ya sis!).

We actually made it through an hour and a half (with two shoes changes and a partial strip down in the street) of trick-or treating this year. Last year it only lasted about 40 minutes before we were tired and needed to be carried. I guess the kid figured out that if he has to share the candy with the parents he better get as much as he can.

As we walked down the street in the dark, the kids approached each house that had it's porch light on- pretty routine, right? NO. They went up the sidewalk to one house and the front door opened before they got there. Three kids no older than six or seven (the youngest was about 4) coming rushing out on the porch yelling, "Our mom's not here yet, she went to pick up someone else and hasn't come home so we don't have any candy!"

That's right folks, 3 little kids yelling out into the dark that they are home alone! And for that matter, probably going to be home alone for awhile.

That's quality parenting for you.

My husband is so proud...

And for this week's installment of HNT, I present to you: my son. Sitting on the toilet. Reading a gaming magazine (EGM I think). Immediately following this photo I was given the look of death and belligerently asked, "Can I have a little privacy here please?" This from the child that will climb out of the swimming pool, drop his trunks, and pee through the fence. Go figure.

A sappy HNT

I'm having trouble finding my digital camera this week (I left it at my dad's following Little Bro's Ninja Turtles party- don't ask), so I decided to use one of my wedding photos. I'm still a newlywed for the most part (5 months today) so I still get all teary eyed and mushy whenever I see these photos. Now you have to see them... sorry.
Happy HNT!!

About me

I stole this little exercise from Osbasso who got it from someone else and so on... Here we go with my version, and I went with my favorite pictures instead of the first listed- some of those were kinda disturbing.

The town where I grew up (Batavia, OH):

Where I live now (Cinci):

My name (Katrina): (yes, that really is my name)

My grandmother's name (Mary Francis): (I used first and middle to avoid religious pics)

My favorite food (mmm...carbs!):

My favorite drink (Margaritas!!!):

My favorite song (My sister, My Friend- Reba): (though I'm not usually big on the country music thing)

My favorite smell (Vanilla): (my husband's too, I think)

If you want to play just type your answer to each category into Google's image search and use the first listed image (or first one you like).

HNT starring my bed!!

I absolutely love my bed. My mom bought it for me when I got my first apartment years ago. It's a canopy bed with a grape and vine pattern on both the head and foot boards. It has the criss-cross bars shown above with my long fingernails (I'm a recovering nail biter so this is a major accomplishment) under the vines. Enough rambling, happy HNT!!!

Junior is growing up too...

Anyone ever experience the high school tradition of "Senior Night?" Where in the middle of a sporting event on the night of the last home game, they recognize all the seniors? Maybe, maybe not. I think mostly it's a chance to give presents- and everyone likes presents.

Junior had senior night for volleyball on Monday. After sitting through the reserve game (I'm so glad high school switched to rally scoring) the Varsity team did their warmups. Then, after they got all sweaty and gross, the recognition began.

First was the necessary- give a flower to the opposing team's seniors cause it would be rude to ignore them completely- part. Then on to the important folks. The home teams seniors! Each one was announced and sent to the middle of the gym floor so every one could stare at her while another member of the team made a touching speech about why that senior (turning pinker by the minute) would be missed from the team. Then the starers (also so known as the audience) clap wildly and cheer.

This ritual happened for each of the seniors on the team and we all stared at them as they got teary eyed and clapped and cheered when it was over. After the last girl was made weepy the presents ensued!

People poured onto the floor from the bench and the bleachers with flowers, gifts, and balloons. Munchkin gave Junior some flowers and balloons along with a big hug. TR and I gave her a cute (and mildly touchy feely) gift of a volleyball playing Precious Moments girl. I thought it was cute and had no idea what else to get her.

Then, after being bombarded with presents, hugs, and tears, these poor girls are expected to play volleyball. They played and did very well- winning in fact- despite some less than stellar coaching. I won't go into that except to put in perspective for you.

My 72 year old grandfather who currently has double pneumonia was so mad about the coaching he was ready to tell the coach he was an idiot and should quit so they could get a decent one. Morgan, who once thought said coach was fantastic, called the man an ass as she left the gym following the game. I've edited these comments for space and content, but you get the point.

I have mixed emotions following Monday night. I'm proud Junior got recognized and played a great game. But at the same time, I'm sad she's all grown up. She'll always be my little sister, but she'll never be a little girl again. It amazes me to see the fantastic woman she's becoming, and I know that there are only great things in store for her. Love ya sweetie!

My little brother is all grown up

Okay, so not really all grown up yet- but a year closer than he was before. TR and I went out with Little Bro and Glenda on Friday night. We took in half of a high school football game (we were there to support the band, not the team) and then headed for Dayton's Oregon District where we proceeded to spend several hours in various bars. It was a great time and we all ended up happily drunk.

Of course happily drunk led to drunken dialing from the car while waiting for someone to come and pick us up. We called various people from colleagues to relatives. While we were certainly obnoxious about it (lots of I love you's and loud woo-hoos) we really did only call those we knew would be either A)awake and/or B) so drunk themselves that they were contemplating doing the same thing.

A good time was had by all and some jokes that seemed incredibly funny then will probably still be hilarious years from now. I'm so glad that we got to be with me brother for this important milestone in his life. It meant a lot to me.

It also meant a lot the following night when he drunken dialed me at 130am while out with some friends to say what a good time he had had the night before. You gotta love drunk dialing...

Enjoying the afternoon sun...

It was a bright sunny day today. I lay on my bed and enjoyed the sunlight streaming in the window because it will probably be one of the last for awhile. Sigh... Happy HNT.

I warned you...

I just thought this was kinda depressing. Someone pass my inner child a Zoloft please.

Your Inner Child Is Sad

You're a very sensitive soul.
You haven't grown that thick skin that most adults have.
Easily hurt, you tend to retreat to your comfort zone.
You don't let many people in - unless you've trusted them for a long time.

This settles it!!

Your Power Color Is Magenta

At Your Highest:

You energize yourself and push others to suceed.

At Your Lowest:

You feel frustrated and totally overwhelmed.

In Love:

You are suprised by who you attract. You're a love magnet.

How You're Attractive:

Open and free spirited, people want to explore the world with you.

Your Eternal Question:

"What is my next source of inspiration?"
Apparently I'm supposed to be stuck with this pink thing forever. My power color?? Please, give me a break! But, I like taking quizzes so this probably won't be the last. Pink? Blah!

The fart heard round the world...

I was sitting here at the computer this evening just reading some other blogs and wasting time (I have a lot of time). Munchkin was sleeping (finally) on the couch. I heard a loud phsttttttt sound and he popped up wide awake and asked, "did I just fart?"

The child farted so loudly he WOKE HIMSELF UP!!! I was impressed (and mildly disgusted) and thought of all the full grown men who would be very jealous of this feat. I felt strangely proud and then told him to go back to sleep.

Five minutes later he throws up on my floor. Lovely. Apparently he does in fact have the upset stomach he claimed to have when I made him get ready for bed. Who knew?

After insisting I clean up his "pook" (the child has an incredible vocabulary but resorts to baby talk when he's sick), he lay down and went back to sleep.

So I cleaned up the pook and was rewarded with a deafening phssttttttttt! Gotta love em!

Headaches from hell

So, I haven't been writing the past few days cause I've had a headache. And not a little, "not tonight dear" kind of headache- a full blown seeing spots, incredibly dizzy, throwing up, the little men in spiky shoes are running around in my head with baseball bats. It's starting to subside, but until it's gone I won't be writing much. Sorry.

Can you guess my favorite color?

I decided to go with a theme this week for HNT, but I'm not sure what it is. I hate feet but I love my couch so maybe I wanted some balance. Anyway, I promise to try harder next week. Happy HNT all!

My husband's grandma grows pot!

Okay, so not really. But she has a plant in her garden that has several similar characteristics as the aforementioned herb, so it must be in the same family. It has similarly shaped leaves and a very similar smell (what? I was a teenager once!). I took some photos, but they didn't turn out so great. Plus, they aren't scratch and sniff, so you miss out on that. But here's what I have:

I told you, not the greatest, but you get the idea. I think that's about it, so until HNT- PEACE!

Little Bro's 21st is fast approaching!!

His birthday is October 7 (which conviently falls on a Friday this year!) and I (as well as TR who will sadly be out of town) have been invited to join in the festivities! Not sure what those will end up being, but I have heard a college soccer game followed by ?????'s. The ?????'s are the part of the evening that will require a designated driver. Do you know how surreal it is to be invited somewhere by your stepmother that will require a DD? I felt so grown up!

Not that I have your typical stepmother, no way! Glenda (we'll call her that cause I can't think of any fictional stepmothers that are fun and nice, so the good witch of the north seems the closest) is the type of person that every kid wishes they get when their parents split and start over. Trust me when I say that I hit the jackpot in the stepparent lottery. Come to think of it, TR didn't do too bad himself- runner up maybe.

Anyway, I'm excited about going out with them. No one took me out to celebrate my 21st with drunken revelry. But seeing as how I had a 12 day old baby, a ton of stitches (ouch), and a batch of painkillers strong enough to take down a baby hippo, I'm not sure drunken revelry would have been the best choice. Though some people love that pills and booze combo.... hmmm, nope not me- I'm spacey enough as it is. If I tried something like that I'd be licking the wallpaper (mmm, snozberries!) and dancing on the ceiling, or some such nonsense (think- multiple lampshades) followed by an intense round of vomiting (I throw up more than anyone I have ever met). Not my idea of a party.

So, here's to my Little Bro and his 21st- hope it's a night to remember (and no wallpaper licking!)!

A sleepy HNT to you all...

That's right folks, it's my back! Not very original, but the most I could come up with at 1:30 in the morning. It's an illustration of what my body would most like to be doing right now. Sweet Dreams all, and happy HNT to you!

Gary is almost dead

It is a sad, sad time in fish world at my house. My favorite fish Gary (see: Gary and the fish guys love...) is not doing very well. He looks to be mere hours from death, an if you've ever seen a fish hours from death, it's pretty gruesome. Of course he's looked close to death for two weeks now, so maybe he'll hang in there.

TR and I have been getting up every morning and looking to see what new disease Gary has developed overnight. Seems like every day he has a new one. He's bloated, changing color, has white patches, eyes are bulging, scales and coming off, and well you get the idea. It really is quite fascinating in a morbid sort of way. Did I mention that he sinks? Yeah, not a good sign if you're a fish.

Now before you start thinking I'm this horrible person that is enjoying watching her fish rot away, let me assure you that I've done as much as I know how to do (and can afford- I don't think I'm taking this fish to the vet!) which is go to the pet store and buy an awfully expensive ($15) box of tablets that are supposed to fix him in five days of treatment. Two weeks later, here we are- $15 poorer with a hideous mess of a fish. I think he's immune to the medication.

I'm sad about all this, but for a fish of mine, he's lived a long time.

Sometimes it's hard to choose

As a wedding present, my grandfather (not the one with the yard sale) made me an absolutely beautiful and incredibly large curio cabinet. My dad brought it down to my house a few weeks ago from his (he lives an hour or so north of us) and it has been blocking the window in my living room ever since. The goal is to get it upstairs into my bedroom so that all my snow globes and breakable knick-knacks can be put in it. Right now though it is home to latest purchases of TR and myself. We decided to have a tasting, if you will, to determine what sort of beverages to stock in the future. This photo shows our choices, which due to some unforeseen circumstances (4 hours in the ER), have not yet been enjoyed. I think they may be on the schedule for later today, so here's hoping! Cheers!

HNT volume 2

I had to take a brief break from boycotting to participate in Half Nekkid Thursday. It's actually me this week, showing off my favorite body part. Enjoy!!

Short update

TR did some randomness to my computer that apparently needed to be done but as far as I can tell has only resulted in some of my favorite files getting erased. I'm slightly miffed right now and as such have not felt like using the computer much. Also, my digital camera, memory cards, and possibly the drive that reads the cards are all currently not working. This said, I'm temporarily boycotting all things computer related. See you soon, hopefully.

Half Nekkid Thursday

Through a series of other blogs, I have learned of the above mentioned HNT. I discovered Osbasso and the guidelines for HNT tonight and decided to try it out. My digital camera is misbehaving, so I decided to use a photo of my hubby from our honeymoon. Hopefully by next week I'll be able to come up with something more creative. Enjoy!

OH MY GOD!! I am such a teenage girl...

Yea! My favoritest (yes, it's a word in my world) tv show in the whole world (the one I got TiVo for so I could watch it AND American Idol) has its season premiere on Tuesday! This is exciting for two reasons 1) it's back after a summer of reruns, and 2) my husband (who also likes it) will be on vacation and thus will be able to watch it with me!

What show has me screeching like a giddy schoolgirl and wetting myself (I know, TMI) with excitement? GILMORE GIRLS!!! I know, cheesy- but it's the best! Though maybe not... it could be a close second to Buffy. Of course GG gets bonus points for still being on the air.

I can't wait till Tuesday night!

Someone piss me off please!

This request does not come from a deep desire to fight, but from the fact that when I'm mad, I clean. Not just the pick up the dirty laundry off the floor and toss it down the stairs in the general direction of the washing machine. No, when I'm angry I dust things, I do all the laundry (I've even been know to wash down the outside of the washing machine), I reorganize cabinets, sweep down cobwebs (which tend to become scary props straight out of a haunted house around here), vacuum everything including the stairs, scrub the bathrooms including the toilets (I think this falls into the worst job in the world when living with males), and, well, you get the idea. I'm like Suzy Homemaker on speed. It's sick. Sometimes I even make cookies. Granted they are the preformed ones you buy in the store and stick in the oven, but it's cooking for those of us that have managed to burn Easy Mac (the horrible microwave version of Kraft's mac and cheese).

Why the desire to clean? Cause my husband's coming home this weekend. Am I cleaning for him? Not really. He's not the neatest person in the world (sorry honey) and doesn't seem to mind clutter or dust or piles of laundry on the floor. I do mind. And if I don't get it done before he gets home, I'll be spending time cleaning that I could be spending with him. Hence the need to be annoyed.

I've not really been home except to sleep and eat for almost two weeks. I haven't done laundry in almost three. The remnants of Hurricane Yard Sale are circling around my house, and the resulting clutter is pretty devastating. I am not feeling the least bit motivated and have just been chucking things willy- nilly down the basement stairs all day that either A) go in the basement and need to be put away, B) are dirty laundry and need to be washed or, C) are random things that have no home and tossing them in the basement seemed like the easiest solution to getting them out of my way. There is a pile at the bottom of the stairs that it may take climbing equipment to get over. Sigh.

Wish me luck, or piss me off, cause I have to accomplish something today.

Yard Sale side effects

This fascinating photo is my left shoulder following two weekends of yard sales. Isn't it pretty? It hurts like hell, and after two days is still incredibly red. As you can probably tell, I am fair skinned. I always forget to wear sunscreen, but usually I'm not in the sun very long. Apparently, four days in the sun is a long time. The worst part is having to put clothes on over top of it. If I wasn't afraid of frightening small children, I would not be wearing a shirt. Or a bra for that matter (which is an even scarier thought). Sigh. I hate clothes. And the sun.

The wet and wacky world of yard sales

Here are the promised yard sale photos. This happy, sunny picture is what we'll call the before photo. Everything was set up and ready for the big sale by 9am
when the remnants (or the still raging tropical depression) of Hurricane Me came roaring in. We had to scurry around grandpa's huge front yard and try to get everything covered in plastic so that it wasn't ruined. Unfortunately, some of the things were lost to the monsoon- like rain and crazy wind. Here we will enter into the discussion what will be known as the after photo. Note the gray, gloomy sky, the plastic covered
tables, and the random stuffed animals strewn around
the yard. That rain caused so many issues. The clotheslines strung between the tress decided to stretch when wet and then break under the weight of the soaked clothes. We (actually my aunt and grandfather) spent several hours drying all the clothes in the dryer. That stupid clothesline broke probably ten times over the next few days. All the stuffed animals got drenched (and there were soooo many) and created quite a bit of amusement later on. There was one bear that probably weighed close to 40 pounds and after three days had not yet dried out. I took a bunch of photos of the animals, but this is one of my favorites:
I love the water dripping off this sweet little bear. Trust me when I say that despite his appearance, he fared better than most of the others. Some of them were unsalvageable. Most of them ended up in the trash. The ones all over the yard in the picture above suffered a worse fate than the trash. They were dismembered by my puppy who apparently finds water- logged bears to be a tasty treat. And, after he finished with the bears, he graduated to undergarments. A purple Victoria Secret bra, to be exact (size 34DD for those that care), that I outgrew years ago and made it's way into one of the boxes. That puppy carried it around, chewed on it, and tossed it into the air for days. It was pretty funny. We would pick it up out of the yard and take it back to the box. But he always found it and didn't bother any of the others. Guess there's no doubt that he's male is there? I mean, it was the biggest one in the box...

I am so destructive

Not me exactly, but Hurricane Me. Yes, I may turn out to be the costliest hurricane on record for the U.S. Wow! I mean, I was excited to be a hurricane (it's not like I have the most common name, so the chances were slim) but I never expected this. Munchkin gets excited every time the tv says my name- "Mommy! They said Katrina! That's your name!" He really does speak in exclamations. Since they retire the names of devastating hurricanes, I won't get to be a hurricane again. (Unless they get a bunch in Australia, cause I'm on the list there) I've been watching CNN and The Weather Channel exclusively for the past three days. I am so pathetic sometimes...

On a brighter note, the yard sale went okay considering that it rained three out of four days. I have photos, but I can't find my digital camera (don't worry sweetheart, I'll find it) so I can't share them yet. The amount of water that a stuffed animal is able to absorb is impressive and I think everyone needs to witness it. We are going to attempt this again this coming weekend, and will hopefully not get rained out. Again.

The aliens are winning

You know that movie where an alien grows inside the person's stomach and then just busts out? I hope so, cause I've never seen it and don't know what it's called, and I needed the imagery. That's how my stomach feels today. Though instead of busting out to cause mischief and mayhem in the world, he's decided to stay in and invite some friends over. Just my luck to end up with the lazy one.

Munchkin had a stomach virus last week (consider yourself lucky you weren't in my home- it was pretty gross) and has recovered nicely. I however, now look like death and feel twice as bad. Lucky me.

Have you ever tried to help organize a yard sale, keep up with a four year old, and do normal everyday things like take out the dog all while your system is kicking back everything, including water? If you're a woman, maybe you have and you have my sympathy. If you're a man, I know you haven't. I know you spent the time sprawled out somewhere insisting you were dying and could not possibly walk to the bathroom and get yourself a drink of water.

If I didn't hate body hair and funny smells so much, on days like these I'd wish I was a man. Sigh.

I need a social director

Most days I stay home and lament the fact that most of my friends live far away and we don't keep in touch as much as we should. That is not the case today. I signed on to AIM last night under TR's name (we have a few mutual friends that are on his buddy list and I'm too lazy to add them to mine) and a friend of ours that lives on the other side of the country sent a message. I told him it was me and that TR was out of town with work. We chatted for quite a while and it turns out that he and his new wife (they've been married a week) are in town. He invited me to go out with them tonight (to somewhere TR and I agreed to always go to together) and invited me to the Open House his parents are throwing on Sat. His parents and most of his old friends live here so with the exception of a few people, this will be the first chance for some to celebrate their marriage.

Now I already decided not to go on tonight's adventure (see above agreement with husband), but I will definitely be going Saturday. This guy has tried multiple times to do this marriage thing (never quite making it to the altar) and has finally gotten it right. We met the girl several months ago and thought, "wow, he finally found a good one."

Also in town this week is the girl who was my best friend my last two years of high school. She lives on the east coast so I don't often see her either. She sent me an email a few days ago about getting together.

I ran into another girl I was good friends with in school (see: Friend, or not to Friend?) the other night while shopping for yard sale supplies and she suggested maybe getting together for lunch on Tuesday.

Oh yeah, and a friend who lives a few hours north will be in town for the weekend.

Suddenly I've gone from bored at home to trying to figure out how to fit everyone into my schedule. When it rains, it pours...

Psst... don't tell my husband!

I have a secret that my husband may think he knows, but until now has been unable to prove. I am about to reveal something that I think he suspects, but I would have denied if he asked me about it.

When he's home (and in my defense, most of the time when he's not) I am like the cleaning Nazi. I fuss at him and my little one to keep their stuff cleaned up. I give them huge exasperated sighs of disgust as I pick up things around them. I make loud noises when I clean the kitchen as they sit obliviously watching cartoons. I make them put away their laundry. I want the towels folded correctly and the dishes in the right cabinet. In short, I want them to be neat, tidy, and organized. Wishful thinking and entirely futile.

That said, I offer this:

This is what my living room looks like currently. Not only does it look like this, but it has for almost 24 hours. What is all this stuff? Crap. My grandfather is having a yard sale next week and this hideous pile of crap is about half of my total contribution. Half. The other half is sitting in my basement looking equally untidy and waiting to be carted upstairs to join the unholy mess that is my living room. Sigh.

Of course once all of this has made it's way through my living room and out the front door, it will not be returning. It will either be sold at the yard sale or donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army. I'm done with it. This is a big step for me, as I am a crazy pack rat. Somewhere in my basement are reports I wrote in junior high. I am 25. This makes my hubby crazy, and I am trying hard to let go of things I've had for years. This gigantic mess is my first step, so I think it's justified. So sweetheart, you still have to clean up your stuff. Sorry.

I have no chance of winning now.

I lost any chance I might have had to win the Mom of the Year award this morning. How? Did I yell at him? No. Did I make him eat his veggies or clean his room? No again. So what heinous crime against all that is holy to toddlers did I commit? I broke the bank. The piggy bank to be exact. I knocked it onto the floor (accidentally) and all his precious pennies went everywhere. I suck!

After explaining to my whimpering four year old why it was that I could not glue the gazillion tiny pieces of pink (yes pink) ceramic back together (at which point he informed me that if TR was home he would be able to fix it) and putting all the pennies in an empty baby wipes box I had to apologize and promise (multiple times) to buy a new piggy. He has reminded me several times today that he is not likely to forget this anytime soon. He's four and a master of guilt trips already. That's my boy!

To appease my guilt I postponed the errands I had planned for today and took him to the park. We went to the playground across the street from where I got married- which to my shock he remembered and pointed out. There was a woman there with a boy about my son's age and a girl about two. I know this woman. I know she went to my high school and was younger than me, but I could not remember her name. So we gave each other that greeting where you say "hi" and stare quizzically at each other as if racking your brain for why the other one looks familiar. The boys played, she ate lunch with her mom, and I read a parenting magazine. When it started to look gray and the chance of rain was fast becoming apparent, we went home. He was happy, I felt less guilty, and (almost) all was right with the world.

When did I get so old?

I asked myself that question several times this weekend.

I spent Saturday (started at 4am) helping Morgan move into her apartment near her college. Though she is a trendy teenager (for 11 more months!) and an overachiever (only about school- you ought to see the mess that girl can make in a closet) she's really a good kid. A good kid? See I told you I was old- she's 19 for goodness sake! The trip up was uneventful, and by the time we got there (4 hours!!) I had been awake for almost 24 hours. She had two cars loaded down with "essentials" and had "conviently" forgotten to tell me that her place was on the 2nd floor. So after many trips up the stairs, we had the cars unloaded. Then began the unpacking (please visualize an eye roll at this point). Through all of this, please keep in mind that she has two roommates (both with 2 parents along for the fun) who are moving in at the same time and have probably twice as much stuff. I was very thankful that she is my sister and not one of the others.

As we began to unpack it immediately became apparent that, despite the magnitude of things we had carted up the stairs, she needed some more stuff. Like hangers. And laundry soap to wash the bag of dirty clothes (told you the over- achieving only applies to school) she brought from home and the new sheets I told her at least a week ago that she should wash. (Eye roll) So it was off to Super Wally World for supplies. $100 dollars and a full trunk later we were carting bags up the stairs again. Morgan worked on putting clothes away while I was doing other things. A short time later she realized that the 104 hangers she got at Walmart were no where near enough. So it was time for trip number 2.

This time we had half a trunk full of things to carry upstairs. However, one of these things was a put- it- together yourself bookshelf. Sooo heavy. Okay not really, but remember how long I'd been awake so I get to factor that in. Also, there was a 5 minute monsoon as we were trying to leave the store so we both ended up with the bottoms of our pant legs soaked from the mini- flood in the parking lot. She worked on putting the rest of her clothes away (78 new hangers this time). When she used the last of the new hangers and still hadn't put everything away, she decided to give up and put her jeans in a drawer. (Feel free to begin your own eye rolling at this point)

We got most everything put away and I started assembling her brand new bookshelf. Sigh. No screwdriver. Instead of driving back to Walmart (which in between the cussing I threatened to do several time) I proceeded to put said bookshelf together using a kitchen knife and a nail file/screwdriver wanna be (from my Swiss- army credit card that Mr. "pink makes me cry" gave me ages ago). This was a long, and often R-rated process. Finally the shelf was together and all was good. Morgan's roommate invited her to go to a party. She skipped it cause I was there, and then I passed out at 8:30. I slept until 9:30 the next morning and felt horrible. Not only did she miss the party, but she slept on the couch cause I was asleep on her bed. I'm a slug.

I left there and drove home (got lost briefly and woke up TR to talk to me cause I was still sleepy- not that he was much help cause I'm not sure he was ever really awake during our brief conversation) to get my stinky dog and visit my own home. A very long weekend.

Why did I feel old? Besides the lack of sleep and all the carrying?
1) My baby sister is in her second year of college and her first apartment. I remember her as a baby. Now she's a grown up, and a responsible one at that.
2) I remembered when I went to college (didn't stay long) and how long ago it was. People my age were old to me then.
3) I thought about all the things she's experiencing and how long ago it was that I first experienced them. Some are things that I'd never do now- cause I'm too old.
4) I looked at all these college kids moving in and making plans for fun things to do and thought they sounded like a good time. Then I remembered that I'm a married mom who is ready to go to bed at 10:30. Not exactly ideal for living life in the fast lane.

As old as I may be or feel, I'm happy with my life and for my sister. I like where I'm at and wouldn't trade it for all the kegs and body shots in the world. I'm also glad Morgan is experiencing all that college has to offer both in and out of the classroom. Good luck sweetie! Just remember that hangovers and 8am classes don't make for a good day!

Are you wearing the right tampon?

Why do we need commercials for tampons, feminine wash, and the like? A tampon ad just told me that if I'm uncomfortable wearing my tampon then I'm wearing the wrong one. Really? Or maybe I'm just deficient at tampon insertion. I hate these commercials. I know that once a month my life is going to be unpleasant (as am I) and that I'm going to need the appropriate products to get through it. I do not need to be reminded. Oh my GOD!!!! I just was shown a maxi pad with a "soft, comfy" top layer that's "mmmmm, dreamy" and was told to "have a happy period!" Have a happy period? Never have I had a happy period. Dreamy pads? What is it with these people?

While my husband doesn't seem to mind the tampon commercials, he hates the pantyliner ones. Not because of what they are advertising, but because they use the word "panties." I don't know why he is traumatized by "panties," but it's really funny. There are times when his reaction to "panties" is on a level with the "secret word" on Pee Wee's Playhouse. Arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Gary and the Fish Guys love the color pink. I do not...

Meet Gary (fat fish 2nd from left) and the Fish Guys (the rest). TR gave me this aquarium for Christmas (you have to love a man who buys you presents you actually want) and December 26 I bought two fish. Gary (fatty) and an angelfish. Sadly, the angelfish lasted less than two weeks. We bought some other random fish that died even more quickly- so quickly that I don't even remember what they were. Then we found the Fish Guys. Three each of Red- eyed Tetras and bleeding heart tetras. This fascinating group has managed to coexist peacefully (mostly- a little fin nipping never hurt anyone) for almost 5 months. The rocks in the tank were originally a blue mix with some turquoise in it. Last week when I decided to clean the tank (it was time- believe me) I had to get new rocks. I decided Gary needed a change of scenery and went with red. The large rock (replacing a plain white one) is fluorescent pink. Pink. The group seems to love it. I do not. I dislike pink...

Pink is my least favorite color. I don't wear pink- I think I have 3 articles of clothing that are pink. They collect dust in the closet. Why the distaste? Because I am not a girly girl. I associate pink with the prissy pom- pom crowd. The "I am a weak little girl, please protect me" group. I am none of those things. Besides, who wants to go around looking like a cotton candy machine exploded on them? Not me!

I briefly used (though strangely enough, not sexually) a man who was obsessed with me. He wanted to be the "protector" and "take care of me."
I was not interested in this arrangement, but I played it to my advantage. I own an inordinately large amount of black clothing. Once in a great while I would wear a pink shirt (I had baby pink angora sweater[yuck!] that did the trick) and the poor man would just break down. I swear he would actually cry over me wearing pink. Turns out that he saw my pink as a sign I was softening emotionally and opening up. HA! What is it with men anyway? Pink! It was just a shirt.

Why is my blog pink? Am I opening up? Am I softening in my old age (25 is a quarter of a century)? I think not. I chose pink simply cause I hate it. Crazy, I know. But then, that's the point isn't it?

Bunnies are scary? Umm, yeah maybe.

I've been asked what significance "bunnies are scary" has. Not a lot, but here we go :

1) I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the show, not the movie) and one of my favorite characters is the ex-vengeance demon Anya (who is terrified of rabbits)

2) I think that a fear of cuddly little bunnies is as harmlessly neurotic as some of my issues

3) And, well, if you think about it, bunnies are a little creepy...

Friend, or not to friend?

I got a message from someone on Classmates.com and I'm not sure how to deal with it. This person was my best friend from 7th grade until just a couple years ago. For reasons that I don't want to go into, we parted company. I thought it was the right decision at the time, but now I have mixed feelings on the subject. I feel splitting was a good thing, but I also miss her. She was perhaps the only person I have ever been friends with (besides my husband) that understood and perhaps exceeded my level of crazy. I don't know how to handle this situation. I sent a message containing my email address in reply- I figure that's safe enough, I can always just ignore the messages if I want to. Do I want to try being friends with her again? Is she different? Am I? Would it work? Arrgh!!

Random thoughts

Why is it that the narrators of documentaries try to convince you (through the inflection and tone of their voices) that whatever boring subject they are talking about is the most fascinating thing in the world? I mean, really, while people might be curious about how aircraft carriers are made and when they were invented, they aren't likely to get ecstatic about it. Are they? This of course is based on the fascinating show my husband has been watching for the last 45 minutes, so maybe I should ask him. He doesn't look all that excited about it though...

Four year olds are perhaps the most attention hungry age group I've ever encountered. Munchkin can not take a step without begging you to watch him do it. Sigh... some days I feel like a studio audience in that show with purple dinosaur. God, I hate that thing!

Money sucks! I sat here and figured up my monthly bills today and realized two things: 1) I hate money, and 2) I don't want to be a grown up anymore. While neither of these are very healthy attitudes, I'm come to a good solution- using my amazing capacity for scientific discovery (don't laugh at me damn it) I will invent a time machine that A) allows me to go back to a time when other people paid all my bills, and B) will become a viable source of income as I will sell time trips to others wanting to return to a better time. Sounds feasible doesn't it? It shouldn't be that difficult...

My toes are numb (it's 67 degrees in here) and my ankle is swelling so I guess I should curl up on the couch with my foot up (as I was ordered to do and have not yet done) and watch some boring television (alien documentary anyone?)

Less crazy... for now

He's home!! TR has been home now for almost two days. I knew I missed him but I didn't realize how much until I saw him. And though I missed the big things (you know, sex and all that) I also missed the little things like waking up to his drooly self in the morning, the hugs, his smile, and even him aggravating me for no apparent reason. It's good to be home... cause it's not home without him.

He's coming!

TR called at 7pm from NJ to say he's finally on his way home! It's been way too long! Of course it's a 10 hour drive so he won't be here until 5am, but he'll be here! Until Thursday! I'm speaking in exclamations and can't stop! Sorry, I'm just excited... I kinda missed him.

In preparation for the drunkenness and debauchery that will ensue (as always does when he's been away) I have scrubbed and shaved and moisturized every possible surface and have a very large bottle of bubbly stuff (any self respecting former French student knows it's not champagne unless it actually came from there) chilled in the fridge. Now I just have to wait...

100+ Things about me

This is coming soon!!

The real voices

There are lots of people in my life that I'm bound to mention at some point or another (I do have 7 siblings) and since I want them to remain (mostly) anonymous I figured I should at least point out who they are. So here we go:

Bradley- my husband with whom I have been friends (and had a bit of a crush on) since we were ten. We got married in May 2005.

Jacob  (Munchkin in old posts)- my son. He's 12.

Lily (The Princess in old posts)- my daughter, the diva. She's 6.

Lola- My oldest friend after my husband. We met in 6th grade and became friends instantly. That happens when your levels of crazy are eerily similar. She has a son that is 4 months older than Munchkin.

Morgan- my 26 year old sister who graduated from college in 2008. Not her real name, but an appropriate nickname given her past affinity for the good Captain.

Junior- my 24 year old "favorite" sister. Due to our very similar dispositions and attitudes (okay, we're both bitches- so what?) we get along better with each other than with all the rest of our family. Why Junior? Cause even though she's been told not to "end up like Kat", she's figured out there are worse people she could be like. Currently she's "supposedly" residing in my basement. I don't buy it though, I certainly never see her.

Hottie- my sister who is 21. She's gorgeous (as all my sisters are) and the first time my husband met her (he wasn't yet my husband) he said to me, "wow! ___ is a little hottie, isn't she?" At which point he professed a desire to wash his mouth out with soap and to proclaim that if there was a hell he was now headed there. He's so funny sometimes. She's now married and had a baby girl in Nov  2012.

Little Bro- my oldest younger brother. He will always be my little brother though he's much taller than me. We made a bet many years ago for $50 to the tallest one when he turns 30. He's 23, so I have a few years to save up.  28 so my time is about up.

Glenda- my (soon to be ex) stepmother. She is the coolest stepmom you could ever hope for... but she's mine and you can't have her!

Little Bit- my youngest sister. She's 16 years old. Makes me feel so old sometimes...

1st Love- pretty self explanatory, but my first real boyfriend (real meaning, lasted more than a couple weeks and we actually went places together, not just talked on the phone) who is married with a child of his own. We keep in touch through sporadic email.

Blondie- a former friend. She's a little older than me(not much). We don't talk anymore for whatever reason.

I know I haven't covered everyone, but my hands are tired. I promise to finish later.
